Marine Facilities Australia, MFA, is a client-focused consultancy with extensive experience across a broad range of disciplines within the maritime development and marina management industry.

MFA are your principal marine design and project management team. Our expertise ranges from the design of entire harbours to the procurement of single pieces of infrastructure, these include: Dry Boat Storage DesignRack and Stack Design; Marina Design; Jetty Design and Wharf Design. We can also provide advice and set up systems relating to most areas of marina management.

With over 30 years’ experience in the architecture and construction industry, and 45 years in, on and around marinas MFA has established a broad range of expertise and experience tailored-made to the specifics of the design, construction, management and procurement of maritime facilities.

MICHEAL FOUNTAIN | Director & Principal Consultant

With over 35 years of experience in architecture and project consulting, Micheal brings a lifetime of maritime knowledge to every project. A graduate of the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Architecture (1990), Micheal launched his own firm - the foundation of what would become Marine Facilities Australia.

His career spans a diverse portfolio of commercial, residential, and marine-based developments, including major projects like the Sydney Boathouse. Micheal’s depth of experience in design and project management, both on and off the water, enables him to bring a solutions-driven approach to each client engagement.

Micheal has lived for the past 30 years in the family home he designed on Pittwater, where his lifelong passion for sailing continues to shape his connection to the marine environment. Having sailed professionally, internationally, and recreationally, his understanding of waterfront spaces goes well beyond the technical – it’s deeply personal.

This unique blend of lived maritime experience and design expertise underpins Marine Facilities Australia’s ability to deliver practical, purposeful, and context-sensitive outcomes for every client.

Rhonda Carr | Senior Designer & Project Manager

Having grown up on and in the water, Rhonda has seamlessly combined her lifelong passion for the marine environment with her design and architectural expertise throughout her career at Marine Facilities Australia.

With over 30 years of experience in design and architecture, Rhonda’s skills span domestic, commercial, and industrial projects, from initial concept to final completion. She possesses a deep knowledge of local products, planning laws, and has built strong relationships with marine consultants and contractors. Her expertise in marine design and project management ensures clear communication, efficient processes, and successful outcomes.

Outside of work, Rhonda’s greatest pastime is boating – often spending entire weekends on the water. This first-hand experience deepens her understanding of boating facilities, vessel usage, and the influence of the local natural environment.

HUGH FOX | Senior Project Architect

Hugh began his career in Sydney, earning a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of New South Wales (1991). From there, his professional journey has spanned multiple states across Australia, as well as international experience in Hong Kong and Switzerland.

A career break from architecture led Hugh into IT consulting, broadening his expertise in technical project delivery, process management, and team leadership – skills that now enhance his work on complex projects at Marine Facilities Australia.

Hugh’s passion for architecture was sparked at a young age through extensive travel to the Middle East, Asia, and Europe where he fell in love with expressions of artistic flair and technical capability. Outside of work, he is an accomplished sailor and navigator in long-distance blue water classic yacht races, combining technical precision, interpretation, and experience to optimise performance. This skillset that translates seamlessly into his role at Marine Facilities Australia.

Max Sansoni | Graduate Architect

Max holds a double degree in Design and Construction Management and completed his Master of Architecture at the University of Canberra in 2022. His combined academic background allows him to bring both creative insight and practical knowledge to every project.

Drawn to architecture through a passion for sustainable and enduring design, Max focuses on creating spaces that harmonise with Australia’s natural landscape. A proud Canberran, he takes inspiration from Walter Burley Griffin, blending elements of brutalist design with a strong commitment to human-centred environments.

At MFA, Max contributes to a wide range of marine projects, working closely under the guidance of senior staff.

Consultants

MFA has established connections with the breadth of consultants necessary to take marine development from planning to construction. Marine development, especially in the commercial realm, require an intricate team of consultants, and as a result of MFA’s long term experience every consultant engaged in your project will have an existing relationship with the firm, and have established trust.

Contractors

Having tendered marine projects for almost 30 years, MFA has a good understanding of the contractors with specific experience and skill in marine construction. As your project looks to go to tender, MFA is capable of engaging a variety of experienced contractors to find the best fit.
